Amazon-owned Ring to roll out End-to-End Encryption based videos in compatible devices worldwide.
On 13th Jan 2021, Ring announced the launch of End-to-End Encryption in technical preview for US customers.
However, they are now making the feature available to clients all around the world.
Ring encrypts the customer videos uploaded to the cloud and stored on Ring’s servers, by default.
Customers with compatible Ring devices can now opt for video End-to-End Encryption, which adds an extra level of security by limiting video viewing to their preferred mobile device.
Only the users’ enrolled mobile devices have the key needed to unlock the customers’ video after setting up E2EE via the Ring app, preventing unwanted access and assuring that no one else—not even Ring or Amazon—can watch them.
The company has released a list of Ring cameras and video doorbells that enable Video E2EE (battery-powered doorbells and cameras are not compatible with E2EE).
The following are the requirements for setting up Ring video E2EE.
- iPhone iOS 12+ or Android 8+ (Oreo).
- Ring app versions 5.34.0 and higher and Android 3.34.0 and higher.
- The latest version of the Ring app.
The company has provided step-by-step instructions for setting up or turning off video E2EE on supported Ring devices.
Users may activate the encryption feature at any moment and restrict who can access their videos while still being able to use essential features like video streaming, according to Ring.
Videos that were encrypted when E2EE was active will remain encrypted even if the user disables it.
Ring has started rolling out CAPTCHA in the Ring app to stop threat actors’ automated login attempts and added support for using authenticator apps to sign accounts where two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled.
