Geico Data Breach: Driver license data stolen

Geico, a car insurance company, suffered a data breach, and the hackers were able to steal policyholders’ driver’s licenses for over a month.

 

Geico, the second-largest auto insurance provider in the United States. The company has insured more than 28 million cars and has over 17 million policies.

 

According to a data breach notice filed with the California attorney general, insurance firm Geico suffered a data breach earlier this year that revealed customers’ driver’s license numbers for more than a month. Geico claims in the note that it has patched the security flaw that led to the breach, as first stated by TechCrunch.

However, it was not mentioned what information was needed to access the portal for the online sale.

Geico claims that the threat actors plan to apply for unemployment insurance in the policyholder’s name using the driver’s license number.

 

They claimed that using this detail, they could apply for unemployment benefits in the policyholder’s name fraudulently. The company advises that if users receive any mailings from the state’s unemployment agency/department, they should carefully check them and contact the agency/department if they suspect fraud.

 

Geico quickly patched the website after learning of the breach and added additional security to prevent any fraud or criminal activity.

 

A free one-year subscription to an identity protection service is being provided to all affected policyholders.
