Google has added the option for Workspace users to designate Google Chat direct messages (DMs) or Space chats as read or unread on mobile and the web.
Simply hover over the message and click the “mark as unread” icon to mark it as unread in Google Chat. You’ll notice a red dot indicator on that conversation or space when you mark a message as unread.
Marking a message as unread can help you remember to check it later in Chat. You can designate a thread as unread starting from a certain message in 1:1 and group DMs, Google explained in a blog post.
The steps to mark messages as read or unread in Google Chat are as follows:
If you want to have a direct chat conversation:
Go to your Gmail account or Google Chat.
In the conversation list, select a chat. Select Mark as read or Mark as unread from the More (three-dot icon) menu.
To open a chat, simply click on it. Select a message you’ve sent and then click More> Mark this item as unread. Mark as unread a communication you’ve received by pointing to it.
To open a chat, simply click on it. Click Conversation settings > Mark as unread at the top, next to the chat name.
For a Space:
Go to your Gmail account or Google Chat.
In the conversation list, select a chat. Select Mark as read or Mark as unread from the More (three-dot icon) menu.
To open a chat, click on it. Click Conversation settings > Mark as unread at the top, near to the space name.
The new feature is now available in the Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. It’s possible that the feature will take longer than 15 days to fully arrive.
All Google Workspace users, as well as G Suite Basic and Business clients, will be able to mark messages as read or unread in Google Chat and Space.
