Origin of Presidents Day
The holiday was initially announced in 1885 to celebrate George Washington’s birthday after his demise. The day was recognized as Presidents Day when it became a part of the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act. In the 19th Century, George Washington was one of the most iconic personalities of America, and his date of birth became a day of remembrance. For the first few years, the holiday was restricted to Columbia. However, in 1885 it was announced as a national holiday. It was the fifth holiday to celebrate such a grand day, following Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, and Independence Day.
The first federal holiday was Presidents’ Day to recognize the achievements and contributions of a single American. Till this day, only Martin Luther King and George Bush enjoy this honorable status.
