“Recruiting new donors is important for three reasons: renewing donors, responding appropriately to each need and ensuring, regardless of context, the immediate needs.” It is through a press release that Dr Slimane, Deputy CEO of the French Blood Establishment (EFS) Burgundy-Franche-Comté, appealed to donors and potential new blood donors.
The main goal is to compensate for the departure of the 170,000 people who leave the donor contingent each year, either according to age limit, or in case of medical contraindications. “For a departure, however, it is necessary to recruit 1.5 new people to obtain a similar number of donations, the old donors give more often than the new ones”, supports Dr. Slimane.
Despite a successful 2020, “thanks to 79,267 donors in our region”, reserves at the beginning of 2021 are down. Especially the mistake of this year’s celebration. “The period is difficult: shares are falling, and we fear for the coming weeks without renewed mobilization,” admits the deputy director of the regional ETUC.
Especially since the decline in donations in 2020 was significant in some circles due to the pandemic. We notice, for example – 64% of the donations to student gatherings and about half less in companies.
